The UK lockdown has shaped our day-to-day lives in all sorts of surprising ways. With our houses becoming our sanctuaries, it makes sense that our enforced time at home has made us Brits even more house-proud. And our shopping habits back this up.
On 22 July, Kingfisher, the owner of B&Q and Screwfix, reported that overall like-for-like sales of paint, wallpaper, plants and compost had soared by 21.6% in the period of April–July compared to the same period last year.
It went on to say that overall sales have continued to remain strong, with B&Q’s UK and Ireland like-for-likes up 19.6% in the three weeks to July 18. And we’re not just hitting up the home improvements for ourselves anymore…
A new survey released by the Home Builders Federation (to mark the launch of New Homes Week Unlocked) shows one in five Brits has spent time cleaning and tidying a room in their house specifically to create a background for the ‘perfect’ social media photo.
But the nation’s house pride isn’t just limited to the inside; people are just as proud of the outside, too. According to the Home Builders Federation, the most popular first picture that excited new homeowners take for Instagram is a photo of the outside of their house.
And we’re set to see even more house-proud people now that some sense of post-lockdown ‘normality’ resumes. House building can play a major part in helping our economy to recover, with New Homes Week Unlocked designed to support the industry’s comeback, and the Government is working closely with the industry to get builds back up to pre-crisis levels.
