The Importance Of Wearing Head Protection During The Winter

Now the clocks have changed, winter is on its way, so it is a good idea to get prepared for the colder months ahead. This means getting workwear for the season, including waterproof jackets and JCB wellies, but also, importantly, a good-quality hat.

Although it is, in fact, a myth that you lose the majority of your body heat through your head, it is still a good idea to cover it up during wintertime, particularly if you are frequently working outside.

This is because leaving any skin exposed to the elements will cause heat loss. Therefore, as your head accounts for ten per cent of your body, if you do not cover it, you will lose one-tenth of your body heat.

According to a study in The BMJ, not wearing a hat could also make people feel the cold more easily, as their head has less subcutaneous fat than other parts of the body. At the same time, vasoconstriction is less effective over the head, and ageing men are typically less able to benefit from extra warmth provided by hair.

It is also thought that being exposed to wind and wet conditions by not being covered up can make the body feel even colder.

To make sure workers protect themselves against the chill this winter, it is a good idea to wear a hat made from a quick-drying material. A beanie that can be pulled over the ears or has lined ear flaps, as well as a visor, is also sensible, as this will offer more protection in the cold.

Workmen might also consider getting a neck gaiter to keep their neck warm. They can also be used as a mask to cover the nose and mouth, a balaclava for as much coverage as possible, or a headband to protect the ears.
