Which Tradespeople Were Most In Demand In 2020?

There’s no denying that 2020 was a challenging year for many people and for those in the construction industry it involved a number of changes to the way they work to ensure they are Covid-secure.

However, it appears that the Covid-19 pandemic has done little to dampen demand for tradespeople around the UK and a survey conducted by Vanarama and Rated People has revealed which tradespeople were most sought after in 2020.

Of those surveyed, two-thirds said that they called on the services of a tradesperson during 2020, with plumbers at the top of the list. In fact, 23 per cent of those questioned said they’d hired a plumber. Electricians were the next most sought-after tradespeople, with 11 per cent having called on them.

Builders were in third place, with gardeners and decorators making up the top five. It’s perhaps unsurprising that people decided to make changes to their homes given that we’re all spending so much more time in our properties.

Interestingly, 20 per cent of those who said they’d attempted their own DIY admitted that they had to call in a tradesperson to rectify a mistake that they’d made.

With the UK entering another national lockdown, it’s likely that tradespeople will remain busy as people continue to evaluate and alter their properties.

Some 68 per cent of those surveyed said they were still happy to have professional tradespeople in their homes, despite the ongoing pandemic.

In September last year, The Sun shared research from Draper Tools which found that the average Brit has four home improvement tasks that they are actively avoiding. The most common reason for putting off home improvements is that it’s a job they’ve never tackled before, while others are worried they’ll make the situation worse.
